This is a story of an old lady that lived in a nearby town of where i live. The story happened in the 1920s, and even if it sounds fake, it did really happen.
There was a old lady, we will cal her Inga. Inga used to live on a small mountain by herself in a small house. She had some chickens and 1 cow. She would fish and gather resources, that she used to sell at the local marked. 1 day she was at the town, where she met a young lady, we will call her Anne. Inga asked Anne if she could help her with walking the cow down the mountain, since she wanted to trade it for some goats. Anne agreed, and they both went back. The next day, they took the cow, and started walking towards the town. Before the town, they would need to go through a forest. People say the forest is haunted, because they have heard a ugly crying inside the forest. People have said that "Eahparaš" is living in the forest, and can be heard crying. The 2 of them kept on walking through the forest, until Inga noticed something. There was a ptarmigan (a type of grouse) flying beside them. The bird flied around them once. Inga said to Anne that she needed to go into the forest, and that Anne had to wait for her with the cow. The ptarmigan just finished it's 2nd round of flying. Inga ran into the forest, with the bird following her. She stopped, and said "I know what you are, reveal yourself!" The bird flew behind some bushes. Then out of the bushes crawled a little child, about 3-4 years old. She was only wearing a piece of leather around herself. She was really skinny, but she was missing 1 eye and 1 foot. Inga looked at the child, and started praying, always having eye contact. She prayed, but she didn't pray like she used to. Instead she is praying backwards. She started the prayer at the end, and finished at the start. The child sits quiet and doesn't move an inch. After she is done with the prayer she says "I will now give you a name, and your name will be Needle. You can rest now, and you don't need to wander around here alone." The child sits still, before turning around and going back into the forest. Inga then walks back to Anne, but she doesn't say anything. They walk down to the town, where she sells the cow. The following weeks when she was visiting the town, she could hear people talking on how the crying was gone in the forest, and that the creepy feeling is gone.
This story is about what we call a "Eahparaš". Eahparaš is a ghost of a abandoned baby that is left to wander the wilderness as a ghost. In the old times, when the Sami people used to live further away from people, raising children would be difficult. Children that were born with deformities, got badly injured or were born before the parents got married, would often be left behind to die. The reason is because the parents can't risk their other children and themselves raising a child that might not live long. So the parents would often leave the children to die in the forests. These children would then become "Eahparaš". Eahparaš are rarely seen, but they have a terrifying cry that is heard in the forest. There are also some that are able to disguise themselves as ptarmigans. It is said that when a Eahparaš runs around you 3 times, you would become insane and dangerous, often committing suicide in the end. The only way to stop a Eahparaš, is by talking to it, and doing a certain prayer backwards. After the prayer, you are supposed to give it a name. BUT you should not give it a human, or a animal name. The name should only be tool, or anything else. Often boy eahparaš would get "Hammer, Axe, Knife etc." stuff that boys used to do. Girls would get "Needle, Fork, Thread etc."
As for the woman, people said that she was not a ordinary human, and that she knew stuff that other people didn't know. That might be the reason why she was able to stop the ghost, and give it a name.
